Breaking Away from CAG, Return to the Path of Happiness

Aunt Chen, born in 1961, is a 62-year-old ordinary woman from Fengyang County, Anhui Province. She was obsessed with the Almighty God cult for ten years, which led to the breakdown of her family. Eventually, with the help and education of anti-cult volunteers, she broke free from the mental shackles of the cult and returned to her family.

Aunt Chen was originally a Christian. After attending a service at a Christian church, she accidentally came into contact with members of the Church of Almighty God (CAG), who were masquerading as Christians. At first, Aunt Chen did not believe in the so-called “Almighty God,” but later, after having conflicts with her husband, the cult members seized this critical point. They exploited the conflict between Aunt Chen and her husband, continuously contacting her and magnifying the discord, thereby alienating their relationship. After repeated instigations and inducements by the cult members, Aunt Chen began to distance herself from her family, gradually embracing the CAG, and frequently participating in their gatherings. Because of the Almighty God, the conflicts between Aunt Chen and her husband deepened more and more...

Due to the frequent activities of the Almighty God cult, most of which took place at night, Aunt Chen often left her grandson in the care of her husband, going out after dark and returning home late at night, sometimes not coming back until the next morning. Her husband was very dissatisfied with it, and the two often had intense arguments. Aunt Chen's husband recalled, “At that time, I didn't know what she was doing all day long. If it were something legitimate, why would she need to go out at night and do it behind people's backs? She was never home, and whenever I mentioned this situation to her, she would start arguing with me. I advised her not to believe in those things, but she still went to those so-called ‘gatherings’ with those people.” Because Aunt Chen continued to do things her own way, the conflict between her and her husband deepened. Aunt Chen's husband also began to feel disappointed, and the couple started ignoring each other. Aunt Chen's son also gradually began to distance himself from her...

Although Aunt Chen was not very literate, the widespread use of the internet allowed cults to spread through multimedia formats. During meetings, Aunt Chen listened to others talk about cult books like The Word Appears in the Flesh by Almighty God. After the meetings, she would go to other people's homes to watch cult content on DVDs. Under such brainwashing, Aunt Chen embarked on a frenzied path of “spreading the gospel.” Aunt Chen recalled, “They preached to me that the female Christ came to save us, saying that the more and wider the gospel is spread, the more merits one would accumulate.”

At the end of 2012, Aunt Chen was administratively detained for participating in illegal activities of the CAG. However, Aunt Chen did not realize her mistake, believing that this was a test from God. She followed “their” path step by step, first becoming a small leader at the local stronghold, and believing that she could later become a big leader for more people, and receive more blessings from God. Thus, she engaged in cult activities without stopping.

In August 2023, Aunt Chen was once again reported and apprehended for engaging in illegal activities related to the Almighty God. In the following period, anti-cult volunteers in Fengyang County provided support and re-education to cult members. During the support and education sessions, numerous cases of the cult harming and taking lives were presented to Aunt Chen. Gradually, Aunt Chen saw through the cult's facade: the Almighty God was not there to help her but had instead caused deep conflicts between her and her husband, and had also distanced her from her son. Through multiple sessions of learning and guided education, Aunt Chen gradually returned to rationality, society, and her family.

During a follow-up visit after the re-education ended, Aunt Chen told the volunteers, “Since my mind was freed, the relationship between my husband and me has improved a lot. Now, we do some small business around the neighborhood, and our life is getting better and better. I am grateful for the government's help and care. I have completely understood the nature of cults, and no cult will ever deceive me again!”
